Absolutely! Yes, proper technique and flexibility will allow you to position your body in ways that allow you to use less grip strength, but any challenging climb will be comprised of holds that are either small, sloped, angled, or awkwardly placed, and while technique will help, it’s no substitute for a powerful grip. The ability to clamp down and hold tight through the move is one of the most crucial pieces to being a good climber, and that’s exactly what hangboard training will equip you to do well. If you feel like you are at a plateau in your climbing abilities, hangboard training is exactly what you need to make it through that next crux.

We think a better question is, why do other hangboards even have those holds? If you want to train a 1, 2, 3 or 4 finger grip, just don’t use your other fingers. By not including specific grip-widths in the board, you’re free to train with as many fingers as you’d like at any place on the board you’d like. You can train with a wide-stance 2 finger grip, or close-stance 1 finger grip, or vice versa. You really don’t need a physical width restriction to force you to use only 2 fingers, you can just choose not to use more than 2 fingers. On top of that, the board just looks cleaner and more sleek this way. More functionality AND better looks?! That’s a win, win.

Please only mount the board onto solid wood of some kind. Either a beam, joist or stud, just make sure to use something solid. You’ll be putting your whole weight onto it, after all. You’ll want to mount it somewhere with an overhang - like above a doorway, or an arch - so your feet and face aren’t smooshed against the wall while you hang off of it. Once you’ve found the right place, all it takes are 4 screws, which we’ll provide in the box. When you place your order, you’ll be asked if you would like the screw holes pre-drilled, and if so, at what width. Simply provide the measurement you need - either from the center of one stud to the centre of the next, or whatever it is you need - and we will drill it for you before we send it off. If you choose to go with no pre-drilled holes, just make sure you have the ability to drill your own holes. The hangboard is made of solid wood, so if you try to turn the screws directly into the wood without drilling first, you will likely split the wood.
